In addition, other elements conspire to take away from the harvest for which we worked so hard to produce. Despite the best application of modern agricultural practices, an unavoidable portion of what is grown rots in the fields prior to harvest time, or in the world’s storage bins afterwards. Every year, depending upon geographic location and intensity of El Niño events, crops suffer from too little water and wither on the spot, or are lost to severe flooding, hailstorms, tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones, fires, and other destructive events of nature. Many of these phenomena are at best difficult to predict, and at worst are impossible to react to in time to prevent the losses associated with them. In sub-Saharan Africa, locusts remain an ever-present threat (42), and can devastate vast areas of farmland in a matter of days. Even after a bumper crop is realized, problems associated with processing and storage lessen the actual tonnage that is available to the consumer. A large portion of the harvest, regardless of the kind of plant or grain, is despoiled or a portion consumed by a variety of opportunistic life forms (., fungi, bacteria, insects, rodents) after being stored. While it is conceded that at present the abundance of cash crops is more than sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of the world’s human population, delivering them to world markets is driven largely by economics, not biological need. Thus, the poorest people – some billion – are forced to live in a constant state of starvation (43), with many thousands of deaths per year attributable to this wholly preventable predicament (44). Locating vertical farms near these human “hot spots” would greatly alleviate this problem.

All applicants who applied in a previous year should indicate the last year they applied in the MSW Supplemental Application.  Applicants who previously applied for 2017 MSW admission, and were not admitted or chose not to enroll, may request to use some of last year’s application materials without having to resubmit everything new this year. Applicants who did not submit a complete MSW application for the Summer/Fall 2017 quarters do not have the option of re-using past materials and all new materials must be submitted.  Re-applicants are required to submit a signed “ Re-Applicant Re-Use of Materials Form ” (see the MSW Application Instructions page) if previous materials are being re-used.

In an effort to accommodate a wide range of student needs, the MSW program of study has developed many paths to completing the program; full-time, part-time and advanced standing tracks are offered. Courses are offered in traditional classroom settings and in a hybrid format (combination of traditional classroom and online education).  First-year coursework builds a foundation to orienting students to the social work profession from a Christian context. In the second year, students focus their studies in an area of concentration.

Degree candidates can complete the traditional MSW track, earning 65 credits, in nine consecutive semesters. In addition, students on this path must complete two field internships that total 1,200 hours of experiential learning. Alternatively, the advanced standing track draws learners who have completed an undergraduate social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. These students can earn their master's of social work online by completing 40-43 credits and a 1,000-hour field internship. Finally, degree candidates on the human service experience track must have previously held a supervisory role in human services for at least two years. These students can finish the online master's in social work's requirements in nine semesters, completing 65 credits and a 1,000-hour field internship. All learners, regardless of their chosen track, must complete the program within six years of enrollment.
