My father came to America from Italy in 1968 as a 12 year old. On his first day of school in New York City, the teacher changed both his first and his last names! (well, he changed the first one and then gave him a choice about which part of his complex last name should be salvaged). And forget about his language, culture, religion, etc. – the teachers could care less about those things. So, in a sense, one might say that America has come along way during the past 40 years. Still, I’m not convinced: what parades as multicultural thought in this country is often superficial at best.
